至8月中旬，中国石化的SBC总产能达41万吨/年规模，首次超过美国Kraton（科腾）聚合物公司的40.5万吨/年规模，成为全球最大的SBC生产企业。今年前7个月，中国石化的SBC国内市场占有率为约61%。
中国石化旗下的巴陵石化、燕山石化、茂名石化三家单位目前的SBC年产能40万吨。其中，巴陵石化单套20万吨/年SBS装置产能为全球最大同类装置，该装置年产15万吨扩改至年产20万吨并实现一次开车成功。
SBC是“苯乙烯类热塑性弹性体”的英文缩写，又称苯乙烯嵌段共聚物，是以苯乙烯、丁二烯或异戊二烯为单体的嵌段共聚物，因其生产过程中均采用有机锂为引发剂，故又称锂系聚合物。SBC主要有SBS、SIS和相应的加氢产品SEBS和SEPS等。作为兼具橡胶和塑料特性的热塑性弹性体，SBC在制鞋、沥青改性、粘合剂、密封剂、聚合物改性、增粘剂等方面有着广泛应用。SBC的工业化生产始于20世纪60年代，20世纪90年代以后，随着SBS应用领域的不断扩大，世界SBS生产发展迅猛。
上世纪80年代初，燕山石化研究院SBS小试及中试成功。之后，巴陵石化合成橡胶事业部（原岳化合成橡胶厂）与燕化合作在国内率先进行千吨级SBS工业试生产。1989年底，当时国内首套万吨级SBS工业生产装置在巴陵石化建成，进入工业试生产，结束了我国SBS产品长期完全依赖进口的局面，该项目1991年通过竣工验收。1996年，1万吨/年SBS成套工业技术开发项目获国家科技进步一等奖。SBS生产技术被列为中国石化26项专有技术之一。
近年来，国内SBC产业发展迅速。目前近10家SBC生产企业的现有产能达71万吨/年。中国石化所属的三家SBC生产企业中，巴陵石化可生产SBS、SIS和SEBS等产品，燕山石化和茂名石化可生产SBS产品。业界人士称，作为目前国内最大的SBC生产和研发企业，巴陵石化SBC研究开发的进展和水平，基本上代表了我国在该领域的进展和水平。经过不断自主创新和调整产品结构，该公司合成橡胶事业部的SBC产品用途得到了广泛拓展。
从2005年 7月1日起，中国石化深化化工销售体制改革，巴陵石化、燕山石化及茂名石化所生产的SBS产品，由中国石化化工销售公司统一销售。
